Parent
The most straightforward "how to" manual for loving your toddler
Reviewer:
Tara from Redmond, WA
There are two books that have made a profound impact on me as a
first time parent of a now 17.5 month old: The Continuum Concept by Jean
Liedloff and this. Janet Matson explains in no nonsense terms exactly
how to avoid what Jean Liedloff describes as being too child-centered.
Back to Basics Discipline is so well written I was able to implement her
ideas almost immediately - with great results right away. I now spend my
days loving my toddler and looking forward to spending time with him.

Raising Confident, Responsible Children
|
Reviewer:
Dian J. Pizurie from Riverside, California |
Janet Matson writes common sense advice about a subject often
fraught with misinformation and flavor-of-the-month approaches.
Every person who has children, might have them someday, or is just
around children on a daily basis needs to own this easy-to-read,
practical handbook for growing happy children into productive
adults. I loved every chapter, and I totally agree with all
Janet's advice. Teachers, as well as parents, will find helpful
ideas on how to achieve control without crushing a child's spirit.
This is a great gift for potential parents! I am a parent,
grandparent, and high school teacher, and I will be implementing
Janet's advice in my classroom tomorrow. What's more, I'm going to
recommend it to some parents because this book will help even
those with teenage children!

Parenting Questions and Answers
Many parents find discipline to be frustrating
– often due to little or no results. Do you
find this true for you?
Answer:
Most likely you are not being consistent. Chapter 4 in Back
to Basics Discipline discusses how to accomplish this.
Improper
use of a time-out is a common mistake. Do you know how to use a
time-out effectively?
Answer:
A time-out should involve removing a child from an enjoyable activity.
Sitting him in the corner or his room for quiet time may be sending him
the wrong message. Read Chapter 3 of Back to Basics Discipline
for more on this discussion.
When you
discipline your child does he know it’s because of his behavior, or
does he think it’s because you are angry? Do you know the
critical aspects of anger and discipline?
Answer:
Rule 4 of the Seven Golden Rules in Back to Basics Discipline
states “Never punish when you’re angry”. There is a detailed
explanation of the consequences of punishing when you are angry and what
you should do.
It has
been reported that over 70% of parents believe that spanking is an
effective method of discipline. If you are considering this method
do you know the limitations and guidelines for spanking?
Answer:
Chapter 3 gives plenty of discussion on this subject along with a
frequently asked questions and answers section.
Starting
early is the key to success. Children give clear signals that
it’s time to start disciplining, do you know what they are and what
you should do about them?
Answer: Rule 1

You are teaching by your inaction (allowing them to get away with
something-turning a blind eye) just as much as you do with your actions
and words.
Do parents need to be on their kids constantly?
Is everything about discipline?
Answer: Focus
on the big picture. Information in Chapter 5 discusses the importance of focusing on
the big picture. The

Discipline.
Are your
actions, reactions, and how you interact in front of your child that
important? Shouldn’t your
child just mind you?
Answer:
Things you do have the potential of teaching your child
something, good or bad, that can stay in his mind forever.
Chapter 8 in Back to Basics Discipline tells you the
importance of things like, Power of your smile, Negative images, Keep
Disagreements Private, and many more valuable things you need to know to
raise a wonderful child.
How
important is a sibling relationship?
Answer:
It is very important as they can rely on each other throughout
life for unconditional love and support.

From
the Author
If you are
one of a growing number of people experiencing discipline problems
with their children and are looking for parenting solutions, I wrote Back to Basics Discipline for you.

People
often regard discipline in either of two extremes.
On one end of the spectrum is the parent who is too
tolerant and permissive. And
at the other end of the spectrum is the parent who is too strict
and overbearing. This
book is neither. It
offers a no-nonsense approach that is firm, but loving – and
best of all, it gets results.
Using real
life examples, I show you how for each disciplinary event there is
a specific lesson learned that is directly related to the
development of character in children.
Often, advice parents are getting from the experts today is
focused on getting a child’s cooperation through explaining and
negotiating. Discipline
is not about getting cooperation – it’s about instilling
respect, responsibility, self-control, honesty and compassion.
Back
to Basics Discipline is a little
book with a big message – and will not waste your time. Best of
all it will appeal to your own
parenting instincts. Many
of my readers have commented, “Yes, this rings true for me!”
This book
is for people who want their kids to mind – kids who are
well-mannered at home, in school and in public.
Back to Basics
Discipline will eliminate the fear and guilt often associated
with disciplining children because it helps parents understand why
disciplined children are happier children.
I must warn you - be prepared to receive compliments on a
daily basis on what good children you have!
